5 HABITS OF HIGHLY INEFFECTIVE PEOPLE
Do you know that the difference between greatness (effectiveness) and mediocrity (ineffectiveness) is often how an individual views or handles his mistakes?
Yes, the reason why some people keep failing and keep making the same mistakes over and over again is that they don’t respond positively, and keep blaming everybody and everything else but themselves!
According to John C. Maxwell, “People on the failure freeway make mistakes but blame them on others.” He said that these people respond in one of the following ways. They:
1. BLOW UP (ANGER):
When these people make mistakes, they get angry at everyone and everything, even God! They become walking ‘time bombs’, ready to explode (or rather, implode) at any time.
The consequence is that an unchecked anger makes a small problem bigger. If you don’t govern your anger, it will end up governing you and making you blind to any reasonable solution that problem. According to Charles Buxton, a nineteenth century English author,
“Bad temper is its own scourge. Few things are more bitter than to feel bitter. A man’s venom poisons himself more than his victims.”
2. COVER UP (PRETENSE):
Another habit of highly ineffective people is the ability to cover up their failures and pretend as if nothing happened. Instead of admitting their flaws honestly and search for solutions to the problem at hand, they waste their energy and time trying to cover it up!
I have to come to learn that the most important question about mistakes is not “whether if people will know about it” but when people will know about it.” H. Stanley said this,
“Don’t waste your energy trying to cover up failure. Learn from your failures and go on to the next challenge. It’s okay to fail. If you are not failing, you are not growing.”
3. SPEED UP (NO REFLECTION):
People become highly ineffective when they can’t reflect upon their mistakes, look back and learn. In this case, mistakes and are repeated over and over again without learning anything in the process. According to William Dean Singleton,
“Too many people, when they make a mistake, just keep stubbornly plowing ahead and end up repeating the same mistakes. I believe in the motto, ‘Try and try again.’ But the way I read it, it says, ‘Try, then stop and think. Then try again.”
4. BACK UP (RETREAT):
It is very common for people on the failure highway to change their resolve when they make a mistake. Most often, we end up changing our perspective and beliefs (even if they are right!) about a positive cause because we cant convince ourselves or others about it. No wonder General Payton C. Marsh concluded that,
“Any man worth his salt will stick up for what he believes right, but it takes a slightly bigger man to acknowledge instantly and without reservation that he is in error.”
5. GIVE UP (NO PERSEVERANCE):
Highly Ineffective people lack commitment and perseverance, and they end up quitting the race they are almost at the finishing line. Paul J. Meyer, a personal growth expert, had this to say, “Ninety percent of all those who fail are not actually defeated. They simply quit.” Even Thomas Edison said,
“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”
Do you possess any of these habits? Have mistakes or failures made you highly ineffective? Then it is high time you picked up from you stopped! You have to wake to go up! You’ve got to open your eyes, admit your mistakes, and take responsibility for your current actions and attitudes.
Know this,
Mistakes are…
MESSAGES that give us feedback about life;
INTERRUPTIONS that should cause us to reflect and think;
SIGNPOSTS that direct us to the right path;
TESTS that push us toward greater maturity;
AWAKENINGS that keep us in the game mentally;
KEYS that we use to unlock the door of opportunity;
EXPLORATIONS that let us journey where we’ve never been before;
STATEMENTS about our development and progress.
